Judge Julian Abele Cook, Jr.JUDGE JULIAN ABELE COOK, JR.

Before becoming a judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Judge Julian Abele Cook Jr. served as a law clerk for the Honorable Arthur E. Moore in Pontiac, Michigan, chaired the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, served as the Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan, taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit School of Law, and litigated in private practice. During his tenure as a United States District Court Judge, Judge Cook has presided over such noteworthy cases as the suit on behalf of the victims of the Northwest 255 plane crash. He served as Chief Judge of the Eastern District of Michigan from 1989 to 1996. In addition to his membership in several other professional and civic organizations, he is the founder and Master of the Bench of Chapter XI of the American Inn of Court, and also served on the organization's Board of Trustees. He is also the author of several articles, including "Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas: A Glance At Their Philosophies," Michigan Bar Journal, March 1994, Vol. 73, No. 3, p. 298, and "Jurisprudence of Original Intention: A Critical Evaluation," Co-Author, Mark S. Kende, 1986 Det. C.L. Rev. 1003, and a co-author of "Federal Civil Procedure Before Trial: Sixth Circuit." Judge Cook has served as the Chairman of the Sixth Circuit Pattern Jury Instructions Committee since its inception in 1986. He has received several professional honors including the Champion of Justice Award from the Michigan State Bar, the First Annual Trailblazers Award from the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association, and Distinguished Alumnus Awards from Pennsylvania State University and Georgetown University. Judge Cook is currently an Emeritus Member of the Board of Visitors at The Georgetown University Law Center. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University and Georgetown Law School, he also holds an L.L.M. from the University of Virginia and honorary L.L.D. degrees from Georgetown University, University of Detroit-Mercy, Wayne State University and Michigan State University.
